What is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?

To put it simply, SEO is the process that ensures your website will be found and placed high on search engine result pages (SERPs). A company’s best salesperson is their website because it never takes a day off, calls in sick or goes on vacation. Designing a website is a lot of hard work, so why waste all that time and effort if it’s not guaranteed you’ll even be found? You owe it to yourself and to your business to make sure your website has the attention and care it deserves. That’s where SEO comes in.

SEO not only makes it easier on search engines, it also makes your website more user-friendly for people too. SEO strategies help grow your site’s visibility organically (non-paid), which will result in more traffic to your site and ultimately more business to your company.

What it takes to Rank

There’s no denying that search engines are smart, but sometimes they need a little help. Search engines don’t see like humans do, and they don’t perceive websites the way we do. Search engines crawl your website’s code to figure out what it’s about and categorize it accordingly. SEO uses descriptive content that the search engine spiders can read and also makes sure the entire website is accessible to these spiders. Programs such a Flash are bad for SEO because search engines are unable to read the content, and therefore, it won’t be found in a search result.

These are the words or phrases that should be used throughout your website that will attract users to your site. Search engines are savvy and will pick up if you are stuffing your site full of keywords, so using them naturally is important. Keywords should be in your URL, tags, meta descriptions and images if possible. Choosing effective keyword phrases takes trial and error, and here at Partnered Solutions IT, we have the experience to provide keyword research in order to find the best and most relevant keywords for your business.

A good way to make sure a search engine can read the content on your website is to include tags in your code, such as header tags and title tags. Title tags are important because they are often used on Search Engine Result Placements, or SERPs, as short and concise previews of what the page is about.

Meta description tags

Metadata is invisible to users but quite important for websites to communicate with search engines. Meta descriptions explain the content of your page and should be similar to your title tag and target the same keywords but should not be identical because this will be a red flag to search engines.

Alt text on images

Alternative text on images is what allows a search engine to “see” the image by reading its description in the code. It allows for better image search results and therefore should be an accurate description of what the picture is and ideally contain keywords as well.

Insightful content intended for the user

Ultimately, we build websites with users in mind first. Search engines are merely guides that connect the user to the website; therefore, we first and foremost make websites user-friendly and then optimize for search engines. SEO and content marketing go hand in hand because there would be no SEO without content.
